Historic cemetery dates to 1772 The McEachern cemetery, one mile southeast of the Mill Prong House, contains not only the graves of builder, John Gilchrist and family, Archibald McEachern and his descendants but also the graves of many members of the large Highland Scots community who established here in the upper Cape Fear region the largest settlement of their people in the United States. The cemetery contains 66 graves and was established with the interment of Gilbert McMillan in 1772. Several of the gravestones were executed by George Lauder, a prominent 19th century Fayetteville stonemason. The adjacent African-American cemetery contains among others the gravestone of Washington McEachern, the coachman for the McEachern family. The State Preservation Officer in the National Register Nomination to the National Register termed the historical significance of the cemetery as strong as the house itself. It is located on Old Maxton Road, approximately 3/4 mile from the Mill Prong House, and is available for touring and genealogical research every day. | McEachern Cemetery Gravestone Inscriptions | Gilbert McMillanD.
